As a mom or dad, you get to experience so many ‘firsts’ with your baby. Their first word, first step, the first day of school, first tooth, and first dental appointment are no different. You want to make your toddler’s first trip to the dentist a fun and memorable one and set the tone of healthy habits your child will retain for a lifetime. Most parents ask a common question: ‘When should I take my child for their first visit?

According to the American Association of Pediatric Dentists, you should schedule your child’s first checkup within six months of your baby’s first tooth coming out or no later than their 1st birthday.

Although this may seem early, this visit is essential to ensure that your toddler doesn’t have signs of tooth decay, gum disease and that their teeth are developing correctly. Tooth decay is the most common childhood disease, yet it is almost always entirely preventable. Often, kids will come in for their first appointment at the age of three or four years old with cavities and tooth decay that could have been prevented with a routine checkup. That’s why it’s so important to start with dental hygiene at a young age!

Here’s What To Expect at Your Toddler’s First visit?

If your toddler seems anxious, most dentists welcome parents to bring their baby to look around, meet their staff, and get acclimated to their clinic before the initial visit!

  • Examination of your baby’s mouth to check for tooth decay
  • Share concerns regarding your toddler’s oral health
  • Answer questions regarding your baby’s teeth and oral development.
  • Examine and clean your baby’s teeth
  • Show you how to play a role in properly cleaning your baby’s teeth (we know it’s not always easy with those tiny little mouths!)
  • Discuss diet and fluoride needs
  • Recommend oral care products

Home Care for Your Toddler or until the Next Visit

A healthy diet, brushing twice a day, and making sure to see your pediatric dentist twice a year are the cornerstones of keeping a baby’s beautiful smile healthy for a lifetime! Starting dental care for your toddler’s teeth will also help your baby get into a routine when they are older. We all know that babies feel comfortable and secure when they follow the routine that their parents set for them.
